An unexpected visitor came by to perch on our deck today.  It didn't move for hours so I called Toronto wildlife rescue not knowing if it was injured or just hanging out.  The woman at the center told me to email her a picture and she would contact me.  I think she was expecting a pigeon or a morning dove from the way I was describing it but when she called me back she sounded excited. She told me that she was so glad that I sent in the picture because what we had was a nighthawk.  How cool is that!  They usually like to be up high on roof tops, cliffs, tall trees etc. so it was quite rare that it was so low down.  She gave me directions to throw a towel over it, put it in a basket and bring it in.  When I was just about to catch it, it opened up it's long beautiful wings and flew away down the street.  Amazing!
Here's the nighthawk in our backyard.  I was a little bit scared of it so the picture isn't as close up as I would have liked

  1. Amazing.
For some reason Ivy has taken to having me read her the Bird Book, the actual bird identification book. Not much happens in the bird book, there is no plot to speak of, however, Ivy is riveted. As a result, I have really started to notice the song birds out side my studio window. They make me happy

  2. Nothing gets the kids more excited then spotting a cardinal or a blue jay in our backyard. It's magical for them.
